After reading countless posts on the topics in what feels like every single journaling site out there, not to mention braving most of the comments in the <lj user=news> post, what I'm left for is more confusion, a vague sense of anger, and a *killer* headache-though I'm sure the latter is at least partially to blame on my epic hangover (and just so you know, tequila and absinthe? Should NEVER be mixed). And on that note, people who are equating pedophilia to a 'sexual orientation'? Stop it. Just...stop it.

I opened up an account on InsaneJournal and still have a GJ account from the great LJ disappearance from a while back (and man, the current mess is making me almost *nostalgic* of those simpler times). But honestly, I believe it was a futile gesture-I don't see fandom en masse migrating any time soon, and to be honest, it'd probably love to see that avoided, but the likelihood of our corporate Overlords Six Apart turning a new leaf and not causing even bigger problems for fandom in the future is not looking so hot right now. Maybe I'm being cynical. Or maybe it's the fact that they're still lying through their teeth (case in point: <lj user=riddle_torture> is still suspended, and other fannish coms/ljs are too. So don't break out the bubbly quite yet).

I'm torn between being frustrated that a large part of fandom is just dusting themselves off and considering the case closed, until How Six Apart Made Fandom Its Bitch: The Next Episode and being annoyed with some of the MASSIVE overreactions I've been seeing in the <lj user=news> posts. Yes, the situation is unacceptable, yes, no satisfactory reply has been given, plenty of LJs are still suspended when they shouldn't, and there has been NO indication that the very same thing, or something worse, won't happen to us again. But drawing out the Holocaust comparisons and talking about how traumatic the whole thing is is tacky, and not helping with not making fandom look like nutjobs to the general population.

Is the general population (ie The Straights = people without lj accounts) even aware any of this happened?
I was pretty upset when I first heard about this because I had just (last week) paid for my next year of having a paid account...) but I have to confess that I heard about it at Whedonesque because no one I know was suspended or had even posted about it at lj. But it did feel like over-board knee-jerk censorship. Certainly nothing that warrants Holocaust comparisons, but you know it always starts with burning books.

I do think that SixApart is trying to fix things, and that they don't want to scare off thousands of paying customers (or even the clients with free accounts since they have hopes of selling them things someday). But I'm surprised that [livejournal.com profile] riddle_torture is still suspended because how can anyone have any objection to torturing Tom Riddle?

And mixing tequila and absinthe? That is just wrong! As bad as rum & coke.

Plenty of net news resources reported it, as well as some mainstream news. Of course, often it's along the lines off 'HP fans fight to protect their child porn'. *facepalm*

Oh, I get that. Except that some people are actually quoting the "First they came for the communists..." poem without a shred of irony.

It sucks about riddle_torture, since it doesn't contain anything more objectionable than a lot of fanfic coms.

Not mixing as in 'in one drink'! It went more tequila, absinthe, absinthe, tequila, blackout.

I'm just confused by the whole thing. Up until 2-3 days ago, everything was great and then it all fell apart.

However, I really do think fandom needs to move to a place that is more welcoming than 6A.

I don't know if any place would be completely safe though, but I wouldn't mind a move.

Of course, it's *never* gonna happen, at least until LJ kicks the whole fandom out.

I haven't collected my thoughts enough to re-rant, but I posted a pretty skeptical post within minutes of the announcement. I haven't changed my mind.

Though I am glad they AT LEAST restored most of the fan comms, I still think it stinks.

And agreed about our image. Now is when we need to look uncrazy more than ever. And going to the press?

"Oh well it was a Harry Potter community? That doesn't sound bad. Why was it suspended then?"

"Well, it had 'incest' listed in the interests."

I am just about the most anti-censorship person you will find. I support the write to discuss or create fiction about any topic there is, no matter how gross I personally find it. But guys, consider how that looks to middle America.

Yeah, I remember your posts. Barak's post was seriously lacking, and vague and contradictory, so I don't get all the celebrating. Yes, the coms are back, but there's no guarantee history won't repeat itself at any given time.

Yeah, I know! Reading the way mainstream news sources present it makes me want to curl up under a rock and DIE.

I read a suggestion by a Dutch fan making a case for moving to a non US-based server (actually, she suggested we create a fan space there), but as great a concept as it sounds, I don't see it happening in a long...never.

Ow. Just...ow.

I should go look around InsaneJournal and see if it's worth starting up an IJ.

And it took you how many years of drinking practice to figure this little gem out? :-P

Well, I wouldn't know until I tried, would I? ;)

For next week, I'll be jumping off a plane sans parachute. Yeah, odds and the laws of physics say I'll probably DIE, but hey!
