-It’s always strange to post after long absences. It’s like when you have an unanswered e-mail lying for months in your inbox, and by the time you get around to it, it’s all *awkward* and you’ve forgotten what you meant to say in the first place.
-I just started watching Legend of the Seeker. Apparently, this is by the creators of Hercules and Xena attempting to do SRS BUSINESS TV. The result is…incredibly cheesy, actually (the rising music! The slo-mo fight sequences!) but oddly watchable nevertheless (much more than Hercules, where I couldn’t get through an episode. But then, Hercules was one of my favorite heroes as a child, so I’m kind of protective of him).
-Of course I was bummed by Dollhouse’s cancellation, but I’m just grateful we got the two seasons we did. The show’s concept was never going to have a broad appeal and Joss was kind of a dolt for going for Fox again (to say nothing of those ill-advise, formulaic first six episodes, essentially guaranteeing it would never pick up a following). I’ve been seing some Schadenfreude at the news around lj, but hey. *shrug* I liked it, and I see what he was trying to do, but I completely get why others didn’t.
-This week’s TV was EXCELLENT.
This may be not be the majority opinion in fandom, but this season blows the first one right out of the water. Not that we didn’t get some great eps in S1, but I don’t remember quite so much hanging by the age of my seat, my heart actually racing while watching. When Merlin lied to Arthur at the end, I might have actually jumped out of my chair.
I have no idea how Arthur finding out about this lie would play out. It’s one thing for Merlin to lie to conceal his magic, but that that was friendship-destroying, asking him to take Merlin’s word over what he knew to be real, Clark from Smallville level lying. And the funniest part is that while Merlin’s usual lies come from a place of self-preservation and the not unreasonable desire to keep his head attached to his body, the one time he had what I’m sure he thought were selfless motives (though I bet the sorcerers executed in the future wouldn’t be consoled by the fact that at least Arthur’s feelings will be spared), this is the lie that felt like the greatest betrayal (and because I can’t stop drawing Smallville parallels for some reason, it reminded me of the end of Asylum. Gah, this is like SV all over again. I sign up for a stupid happy show and homoeroticism, and end up with angst and overthinking. You’d think I wouldn’t fall for it twice!)
So now Merlin, along with his own secret, knows something important about Arthur and Morgana, and in the former case, it’s information that Arthur himself doesn’t have (for a long time, Morgana was in the dark about her magic too). He’s heading into Gaius territory. I’m not sure what the show is trying to say…is this like the part where he kills people ALL THE TIME and we pretend it’s no biggie? Great message for teh kids, BBC! *thumbs up*
In other news, Morgause rocked the house. Apparently there’s already some whining in fandom about how absurd it was for Arthur to be beaten by (gasp!) a GIRL. LOL, CRY MOAR, it still happened!
That was kind of genius. The kind of genius that leaves you feeling like you’ve just been pounded on, shoved through a window, and had a crowd trample you for good measure, but…yeah. One thing it wasn’t, was unexpected. Ten’s hubris was reaching epic levels, so this seemed like a natural progression. It made for a tense episode, and I knew from the start that Adelaide and her crew were goners (I was pleasantly surprised that Yuri and Mia survived), but that didn’t make it any easier to watch.
Adelaide was *glorious*, competent, heroic, and calling the Doctor on his shit even better than Donna had ever done, and her decision at the end seemed like the ultimate “fuck you” to the Doctor (seriously though RTD, what’s with all the people shooting themselves behind closed doors on yours shows? Do we even want to know?).
Tennant was never more attractive to me than when playing a Doctor who’s completely given into arrogance and his God complex (But then, I also have the hots for Dexter. Hi, I may have issues) but on the other hand, I think I’m ready for Eleven. The way he is now, I don’t know why anyone would want to travel with him.

Date: 2009-11-18 09:11 pm (UTC)It'd be one thing if I thought the writers would explore this broken friendship, but I doubt they will. Right now I just want Arthur to hang out with people he can trust. Merlin's absolutely turning into Gaius.
Morgause is so damn awesome, though.

Date: 2009-11-18 09:17 pm (UTC)I've developed a major girl!crush on Morgause. How is she so awesome?

Date: 2009-11-18 09:38 pm (UTC)Gah, you're right! I hadn't even realised.
And yeah, Merlin seems to be turning into a new Gaius. And yes, greatest betrayal. If they did something with this, it could be angsty-awesome but they'll probably just gloss over it like they usually do. Shame.
Also. Asylum? Are you trying to spoil me for SV? ;)

Date: 2009-11-18 09:44 pm (UTC)And hey, I was being deliberately vague on your account. It's just an episode title and the fact that Clark lies, which is business as usual for him.
How goes the translation? Do you think we'll even manage to watch Merlin this week?

Date: 2009-11-18 09:50 pm (UTC)I knew you'd be much more specific if it weren't for me. ;)
As for Merlin, χλομό το βλέπω. :( *too tired to find a suitable expression in English*
(Lovely Gwen icon!)

Date: 2009-11-18 10:11 pm (UTC)I was very thrilled by the God complex Doctor myownself! I think for the first time Doctor Who seemed to be really character driven: and the character in question had been bent out of shape by the pain of his past... I didn't think I would ever see that show go so close to the edge!
Of course Dexter lives on the edge and jumps over the edge on a regular basis! How awesome has THAT been?!?! I'm loving this season where family pressure had made Dexter more sloppy and risky every week!

Date: 2009-11-18 10:14 pm (UTC)I do like Dexter messing up this season, but I wish they'd do less family subplots and more serial killery stuff. And ghost!Harry needs to GO, he's SO overused.

Date: 2009-11-18 10:19 pm (UTC)I'm very excited to see what RTD has planned for Christmas, will that be his final Doctor Who episode?

Date: 2009-11-18 10:24 pm (UTC)And yes, RTD's final two DW episodes will be on Christmas and New Year's. I can't wait! Technically, I'll watch them later, because I'll be on holiday (ironically enough in England, but I don't plan to watch much TV while there-it will interfere with the drinking, and partying, and shopping, and did I mention drinking?)
Btw, say hi to the others for me. I plan to attempt to catch up with FOV sometime this week (LOL, I know, excuses, excuses. Though my mum has just left from two weeks here, and catching up with months of posts is daunting).

Date: 2009-11-18 11:53 pm (UTC)Don't worry about catching up with months of posts at FoV... right at the moment we're discussing Alice (who has been sick and missing as much as you lately) and The Water of Mars... So see? You'll fit right in!
Frankly I would find time to watch the final Doctor Who episodes, but I know you are serious about your drinking! I'm jealous: I would love to spend Christmas & New Years in England! As it is I'll be in Chicago which will be a lot of fun (but very snowy and cold).

Date: 2009-11-20 01:05 pm (UTC)GOD I LOVE THIS SHOW OMFG I WANT TO WRITE HEARTBREAKING PASTFIC ABOUT UTHER AND GAIUS BUT I AM A LAZY COW. I am definitely enjoying this season, rushed as some of it feels. ALSO HOW MUCH DID I LOVE GAIUS TELLING UTHER OFF LAST EPISODE? A LOT, THAT IS HOW MUCH.

Date: 2009-11-21 10:58 pm (UTC)It was high time for Gaius to show some evidence of a spine. And his remarks truly cut, you could see it in ASH's face. I'm amused by the fact that were any other actor playing him, I'd probably hate Uther, but I can't get over my "Awww, King Giles!" reaction.
