Oh, fandom. Sometimes you frustrate me enough to consider switching off the computer and going out to experience this thing they call life. And then, you do things like this beautiful, glorious, PURE CRACK:
I’m on a ship

(Star Trek XI spoilers. Switch on the speakers, and wait for everything to load before scrolling down)

I realize that there’s something of a Trek theme developing here. I’m sure my attention will be distracted by something new or something old looking good again, but for now, I’m just enjoying the ride. I don’t remember the last time I’ve even felt this level of fannish enthusiasm-I didn’t know I still had it in me.

I’ve flirted with a LOT of fandoms over the years (the one constant I always end up going back to being, of course, HP. I blame Snape), but there’s always been factors that kept me from diving in head-first into them like the source canon going into a new direction of sheer WTF (o hai thar, Smallville!), the fandom being too focused on one character/pairing that made me break out in hives (my love for Veronica Mars can only be compared to my complete disinterest in Logan’s Angsty Manpain) or quite simply, the canon being closed/fandom pretty much dead by the time I get into it (Does discovering X-Files over a decade too late make me *really* out of touch or coolly retro?). Not to mention canons I adore but have no interest in being fannish in/where the sum total of ‘fandom’ is a handful of Yuletide fics (Dexter, Mad Men, The Wire, Dead Like Me, Freaks and Geeks…you get the picture). And then there’s Dollhouse: it’s kind of lonely, loving a show that about 95% of fandom hates. Often, and vocally.

So, this whole exploding shiny new fandom is just…neat. Even though I realistically know the newness will inevitably fade and the traffic will slow down. But in the meantime, I’m getting in touch with my inner fangirl. Besides, it’s something to do until I get new Doctor Who/Merlin/Mystery fandom which will grab my attention next by being awesome and, judging by the pattern, possibly British.

Oh yes, loving X-Files is definitely retro-cool... I only wish that the movie last year had been half way decent, it might have revived my Mulder lovin'.

At least 'Dollhouse' is getting a second season despite the vocal haters in fandom! I'm definitely in all kinds of fannish enthusiasm over Dollhouse! And today I got to see a High School production of Dr. Horrible! It was adorable! Do you think I'll ever grow out of this kind of fandom loving behavior?

The movie sucked ass, didn't it? Even the Callum Keith Rennie cameo and the confirmation that Skinner was alive couldn't save it.

Oh, I'm still enjoying Dollhouse, and posting about it. Even when it feels like I'm talking to the void.

Do you think I'll ever grow out of this kind of fandom loving behavior?

You'd better not, it's one of your most likeable traits! I hope I never grow out of it either.

Actually you have been a huge friend to my fandom feelings: I have to thank you again for sending that disk of Dexter's season 2! It was so awesome to go through that until I was just making myself sick (both from lack of sleep and from too many gory scenes). It was quite the orgy! I'll be interested to see what Dexter's S4 is all about, because I didn't hate 3 as much as others did (there were still some very interesting things happening IMO).

Yeah, the X-files movie was dreadful, I cannot believe that anyone approved that script, and clearly David had forgotten who Mulder was (Scully was better, but she couldn't hold this mess together all by herself, in fact she wasn't even given enough to do). I was so disappointed, I had seen a panel at a local convention before the movie came out, and it was so cool to get to see everyone in person and they all seemed to believe they were making a great film (they were in the middle of filming it at the time of the convention). *sigh*

I think Joss is going to kick ass w/this second season of Dollhouse. At least I hope he really goes for it. It was a miracle that it got renewed so I don't think he should waste that by playing it safe! And although it feels like a void, [livejournal.com profile] biffsbabe has come around to liking the show, and [livejournal.com profile] liluv SAID she'd give it another chance (she gave up on episode 2 or 3).... [livejournal.com profile] taliamama still hasn't watched any of it....
but I have a number of friends who TiVoed and ended up big fans after those latter episodes....
(I've actually come to love all the characters, I even want Dominic rescued from the Attic!)

So yeah, there is no chance of me growing out of this any time soon!

Heh, you've sent me about a bazillion comics and other assorted pressies, and you're thanking ME for that one recorded DVD? ;)

Seriously though, I download stuff all the time, so if there's anything you want to check out that you missed/don't have the channel for, let me know and I'll hook you up.

I think Dollhouse S2 will be kickass too. Since Terminator was unfortunately cancelled, maybe they'll get Summer to do a guest spot. Or any other Joss alumni.

Well you know there is a selfish motivation for me sending comic books: I want you & [livejournal.com profile] lilluv to read & discuss them at FoV! That one recorded DVD really was so over flowing w/Dexter goodness that I couldn't get anywhere else at the time... It is so great to get what you really desire WHEN you desire it!
I'm hating having to wait indefinitely for 'Epitaph One' *sigh*

I'll probably take you up on your offer for downloaded stuff sometime!

I would love to see Summer on 'Dollhouse', and what I would really love is her getting her own show. I wonder if Fox would let Joss create some kind of spin off show (based on Firefly) for Summer? I guess I live in a dream world, huh?

Like when Epitaph One finally airs in the UK? ;) Unless the DVD is out before that. Either way, it will be online!

I need to update on FOV-I bet I have a lot of postings to catch up on.

A new Summer show would be ace. *joins you in the dream world*

It's so great to find a new fandom you're enthusiastic about! I know the feeling of sort of flirting with fandoms but not really wanting to stay for long. HP is for me too the fandom I keep going back to for some reason, even though I really don't like the canon anymore. It's weird, there are so many canons I love way more than I ever did HP, but still I don't necessarily feel that fannish about them.

I'm always fascinated by what makes someone fannish about a source. I've seen it argued that flawed sources are more likely to have fandoms (as fans feel they need to 'fix' things), and I definitely think it's a factor, but I believe other elements like existing fannish infrastructure, whether the subject/a character pushes our specific buttons, and of course whether our friends are in it all play a part.

There's something about HP fandom, isn't there? Just when you think you're out, they pull you back in! :D

I don't know what it is about HP that makes me always go back to it. And now that the HBP movie comes out I'm sure it'll pull me right back in again! After DH I swore to myself I wouldn't spend my money on any HP products anymore, but I'm sure I'll go see the movie anyway and then complain loudly about how much I dislike it and HP in general. :)
