-You know, if any other show decided to feature religion as a major season theme, I'd be wary, but I trust the writing in Dexter go somewhere different with it. And not just because darkly hilarious moments like Dexter referring to his next victim as the bounty he's about to receive.
-Man, it's so weird to see Bill Adama and the priest from S2 Mad Men team up. On the plus side, they've already replace Dexter and Harry as the most disturbing father-son relationship.
-Deb/Quinn annoyed me in the first episode, so I'm glad that's over, at least for now. The fact that their whole break-up is pretty much the reverse in terms of gender of what we normally get of the “commitment” argument in television makes me ridiculously happy-not that I expected anything less of my girl Deb. “What the fuck are you doing” is now my favourite reaction to a proposal (though the line of the episode was probably “And btw, I'm your new boss”. I'm very excited by what Deb's storyline is shaping up to be this season, though of course Dexter was right that this is one more way that we get closer to the “Deb hunts Dexter down scenario”. Deb having her own head!Harry (of sorts) making her feel inadequate was a nice character detail (though Dexter was probably hoping that the Harry on Deb's head didn't share what was in Dexter's with her).
-Awwww, Angel. As happy as I'm for Deb, the poor guy really didn't deserve to be jerked around this way. The way he handled Deb telling him the news demonstrated, once more, why Angel is probably the most fundamentally good person on that show.
-If I never see another scene dedicated to the epic Mathews/Laguerta feud, it won't be too soon. The two should just get a room or whatever they need to do, because that shit got stale a couple of seasons ago.
-I don't even know what they're going for with Masuka and his intern. If it wasn't for the fact other characters have interacted with her, I'd have said she's a figment of Masuka's extremely pervy subconscious (a hot chick in revealing clothing assuming provocative poses and being flattered at his perving? Come on!)
-I called the Good Shepherd dude being actually reformed from the get go, but still dug Dexter's surprise at this. And of course I appreciate any scene that involves Dexter being in a fight as Dexter the lab geek, rather than Dark Passenger!Dexter.
-Seriously, do the writers even remember Astor and Cody exist? In an episode where family was such a strong theme, the absence of even a tacit mention felt jarring.

Date: 2011-10-12 01:35 am (UTC)South Park has been my hero in the 'telling it like it is' to religion department. Years ago, when Stephen Colbert was on Jon Stewart's Daily Show, Colbert used to do a segment called 'This Week in God' which was awesome and outrageous... but no one was able to do it after he left (and it doesn't fit with his character on his own show). I like for people to include religion in the critical discussions about society, it is why 'Jayne's Town' was one of my favorite episodes of 'Firefly'!
