Day Twenty-Six: Favorite classical female character (from pre-20th century literature or mythology or the like): Athena

So I went way pre-20th century, but I can't help it: I was the biggest Athena fangirl as a kid. My sympathies with heroes in the various myths tended to be with whoever had Athena's favour.

There are actually a lot of interesting characters from Greek mythology I could have chosen (I don't know where to begin for my love for the Amazons), but Athena remains the original BAMF. I love that she was the goddess of wisdom but at the same time she was the person who Zeus would sic on Ares (the God of freakin WAR) whenever he got out of hand. Basically, she was a nerd who kicked ass. And yes, she's been shady, petty and randomly vengeful at times, but that was just how the Olympians rolled. I'm still in love with the story of her birth and how Zeus was terrified of her before she was born (back when he thought she would be a he. Also-CANON MPREG. Oh, Greek Myth, how you always bring the lulz). But my favourite Athena moment remains how she managed to claim the city of Athens from right under Poseidon's nose-Athena was the goddess who Got Shit Done, damn it!

I'm still in love with the story of her birth and how Zeus was terrified of her before she was born

You mean the story in which Zeus was so terrified that he made her mother fall asleep, ate her, got horrible headache afterwards, had his head cut with an axe and from that cut appeared Athena? Yep, it was a very interesting story, although I wouldn't say I'm in love with it. ;-) I was crazy about the Greek Mythology as a kid. I've read that big book at least 10 times and still remember a lot from it. Now, I wouldn't touch it if they paid me. ;-)

What I liked about Athena was the fact that she wasn't described as the biggest beauty as the rest of the goddesses, except for her blue eyes. Also, she's one of the few women in the mythology who's never slept with Zeus, and this is an achievement in itself. :-)

Yeah, I remember the details of the story. What can I say, I was a twisted little kid. ;)

I would say sleeping with Zeus would have a double 'eww' factor because of the incest, except it was all a big incest-fest.

Incest was considered to have huge power back in the ancient world... it is one VERY powerful taboo... that's for sure.
And Athena definitely kicks ass! She is easily the best of the goddesses, but among the hangers on I do love Psyche!

Well, it was the time when the whole story of Oedipus came out, so...

Athena does kick ass. In terms of non-Gods, I quite liked Atalante as a heroine, purely for being a better archer than the men.

If I had to have a deity...

I've resorted to telling guys that I'm going through my Athena Phase to explain why I don't want to date or fuck them. It works! :D

Haha, "Athena phase"! You win at life. My put-downs rarely go beyond "No, never, not in this lifetime, fuck off" etc.
