True Blood and Mad Men quick thoughts

I was a bit behind on TV due to a recent holiday (I’m relaxed, but my liver is NOT). Some thoughts on the last few True Blood/Mad Men episodes (spoilers for everything aired).
…meh. That was somewhat anticlimatic.
Things I enjoyed:
-Sookie swearing like a sailor and fucking FINALLY kicking Beeeel to the curb. Mind you, I’m less than confident that this state of affairs will last.
-Things appear to be looking up for Lafayette and Jesus, after the iffyness of the last couple of eps. I loved Laffy’s easy acceptance of his boyfriend, the nurse manwitch.
-Rusell…just, Russell forever. And the door is wide open for his return, YAY!
-Eric LIVES! Not that there was any doubt, but still…
-Pam can provide snarky commentary for everything, as far as I’m concerned.
Things that made me go hmm:
-I like Tara’s struggle to get her life together in the last couple of eps. Her confrontation of Andy was nothing short of brilliant (and Rutina just looked breathtakingly beautiful in that scene. I love it when she gets quieter moments), but my enjoyment is contingent on her coming back next season.
-Jessica is ten kinds of adorable…which of course makes me nervous for her next season, especially after Hoytt’s horrid mother went to the “Jesus Freak’s Are Us”-Mart.
Things in the ‘fuck that shit’ column:
-How to make Jason’s scenes even more unwatchable? Give him a methface girlfriend and have him adopt a bunch of Deliverance rejects. Like his Bush-like face wasn’t enough of an eyesore.
-My hatred for Bill has reached such epic levels, I don’t know how I’ll bear to have him on my screen next season. And if he bests Sophie-Ann, I’m cutting a bitch. It’s bad enough she’s suddenly weaker than Eric…
-Ok, Eric? I’m seriously bored with your vampire emo, Sookie obsession and talking to your dead boyfriend. Get it together! If I wanted brooding angst, ghosts from the past and the occasional joke, I'd watch Angel reruns.
-Alcide is getting less hot by the minute as he joins the legion of men fawning over Sookie.
-Fairies. Just…fucking FAIRIES.
-I don’t even know what the hell is going on with Sam’s storyline. At this point, the only semi-consistent person working in that bar is Terry, which really tells you all you need to know.
Mad Men has been so good for the last two episodes, I’m seriously lamenting the lack of fic.
-The episode with Don and Peggy was pretty much everything I ever wanted out of that show but never dared hope I’d get (The baby! Allison! Duck! The yelling and the cuddling to sleep!). I wouldn’t even say I ship them per se, as their relationship is so much more multifaceted-they’re mentor and protégé, friends who have seen each other’s worst, mirror images of each other…I hate to quote Grey’s Anatomy, but they’re each other’s person
-I’m so over Joan. I can completely understand her position-her stereotypical female avenues of power are very much like the advice women of my grandma’s generation used to give, and I recognize that for the longest time, it’s the only power women got. That doesn’t mean I don’t get frustrated by how very much a man’s woman she is, and how female solidarity is as foreign a concept to her as sobriety is to Roger.
-Peggy firing the douchebag made me cackle in glee. Now to get rid of the rest of the peanut gallery…I miss Sal!
-Betty continues to entertain me, in all her childishness and special mothering skills. I don’t care for Henry, however. He’s as immature as her in regards to Don, just more paternalistically superior about it.
-MOAR Trudy, please! If only to get Pete’s deer in headlights look whenever she’s in Peggy’s viscinity.

Date: 2010-09-14 06:07 pm (UTC)Right now the only people left on TB that I like are Lafayette, Jesus, Tara, Sophie-Anne, Jessica, Hoyt and poor dead Talbot. Russell is a rabid dog and needs to be turned over to the authorities. Also, it makes me sad that any writer left on earth still thinks having characters bury each other alive "for hundreds of years!" is a good idea. After Torchwood and Heroes, omg, come on, just stop it.
I loved it that Don told Peggy to sack that bastard and that she did. The people who think that Don is just a jerk make me sad. Joan's reaction was predictable. I get Joan because she's so Slytherin, but really, she needs to wake up and smell the coffee now.

Sounds about right, though I like Terry too. And Pam. And Eric, some of the time.
I agree that Eric's 'plan' is right up there with "I'll leave your tied up over a shark pool, Mr Bond, of which there's no way to escape'. I don't like Russel, but I enjoyed him as a villain.
Like I said, I understand Joan's POV, but clearly the old ways are not working as well as they used to. Maybe she should consider somewhat adjusting her tactics.

Date: 2010-09-15 05:54 am (UTC)Russell is a great villain but he's gone stupid and it's time for him to go.
I'm actually agreeing with you on Joan :)

Date: 2010-09-15 09:36 am (UTC)Oh, I don't know. Now she's pissed at something he did TO HER, as opposed to something he did to someone else, the dumping will probably stand. I have a really low opinion of Sookie. She's really fucking thick and incredibly self-absorbed.
I don't know what the hell is going on with Sam. It's like the writers decided to make him into a complete tosspot for no reason whatsoever. What's with the generic-as-fuck backstory of betrayal? UNNECESSARY.
Pretty sure something dreadful is going to happen to Terry soon. :(

Date: 2010-09-16 10:03 am (UTC)I think you're right. It's a mystery why Sookie has ANY friends, her self-absorption levels are epic.
Ditto on Sam and the worry about Terry. *sob*
