  • Nicholas Brendon tasered and arrested for acting 'drunk and disorderly' I can't be the only one whose first thought upon hearing the news was "Noo, Xander! You don't have to turn into HorribleFuture!Xander from Hell's Bells! You can still break the circle!
  • I'm still not quite sure how I feel about Lady Gaga and Beyonce's Telephone video. I appreciate all the pop culture references, the sleekness of the production and the standard Gaga wackiness, but the I felt the product placement beyond jarring, and I might have cringed at all the spoken parts, especially between her and Beyonce. Also? I don't care for the song. Out of the album, that's one I always end up skipping. I can sort of see where they were going with this, but the result is hit and miss. It's still nice to see a music video release be an 'event' again though-feels like that hasn't happened since the early nineties. You know, back in the olden days, when MTV still played music.
  • Being perpetually late to the party, I finally got into White Collar. I might comment in more detail at a later post, but let's just say it was surprisingly better than I thought. Not a lot in the way of substance, sure, but the show itself is aware of that, and just runs with the absurdity of the plots while having fun with it.
  • Seriously, fandom? The feedback discussion AGAIN? This is the meta discussion that never ends-I've lost count of the variations of it I've heard over the years, and I've only been in lj fandom since 2002. All of this has happened before, etc. You would think that people would get clued in that if it hasn't been resolved by now, it never will-because the concept of fannish consensus is about as absurd as a demure Lady Gaga video.

Of course it's the feedback discussion again. Fandom never changes.

I'm so sorry to hear about Nick Brendon being tasered and arrested... I thought he was doing do much better (clean and sober). I saw him in a play just a couple of weeks ago and he was wonderful in it, and got great reviews for it...
*sigh*

I had no idea he had addiction issues. Might explain why he was looking so bloated in the face in later Buffy seasons.

But yeah, it's sad.

Yeah, I think the drinking started before BtVS ended, but then got really bad soon after that... I think he has done AA and maybe even rehab in an effort to not let it ruin his life... But I really don't know any details. I just liked to assume that he was doing well, and I'm sorry to hear that that isn't the case.

i. At least he's ageing well, physically?

iv. Hahaha, that was my reaction too, but people are really serious about this "don't comment on other comments unless you're going to comment on the post as well" thing. And I partly didn't realise it was an issue because when you comment on the post, the OP always gets a copy... and if they want to chime in, they will, right? No, apparently not.

Whatever, I can't deal with rules. My intentions are good. I can't get fussed about it.

i....eh. YMMV, obviously.

iv. There are so many random RULES, it's insane. Personally, when I see the kind of post that says "Do not comment/feedback unless x, y, z", it only ensures I'll never comment on the person's fic/meta, you know?

Haha. Not too long ago some people were saying they missed old-school meta. Old-school meta? You got it!

I like Gaga's music, but the more she dresses in insane outfits and does insane things, the more she bores me.
Like Telephone, I thought it was alright - colourful, the spoken parts made me laugh with their wooden delivery ('Gaga, trust is like a mirror...'), the costumes were cool. But people seem to be imbuing her and it with way more meaning than I can see. I don't know if I'm missing the point or they're seeing stuff that isn't there.
It does seem though like the stuff she does (maintaining super-thin frame, showing shaved vag, saying how she isn't a feminist because she 'loves' and 'hails' men, lipstick lesbianism) is nothing new and anyone else doing them would be accused of being part of the system...? I dunno.

While I agree that people are definitely looking for more meanings than they are (shocker, people on the Internet, overanalyzing!), I do think she's a lot more conscious of her image and the messages than 99% of pop stars out there. Personally, I love her insane outfits/general schtick, but I can see how it might be tiresome for some.

I agree that Gaga in a lot of ways conforms to the current beauty ideal (slim/fit, white, blonde, young), but she's also not afraid to play with styling to come off as almost grotesque. As for lipstick lesbianism...well, the woman making out with her in the video was quite butch, which you don't see very often. In some ways she's catering to the male gaze, but in others she isn't, and I appreciate the odd space in between she occupies.
