Isn't this amazing news? When I saw the ratings for the finale I had given up all hope! This is kinda like a miracle.... of course they want to cut Joss' budget... and they want him to tape digitally instead of using film (which is more expensive) but still, getting to tell his stories? Priceless!
I'll admit, I don't think the ratings will ever be stellar, but the critics will continue to love it (as will I).
I'm also happy that Castle was picked up, I think that it is a great role for Nathan (allowing him to be funny and romantic) and I think it will be a bigger hit when more people see it.
I've heard about the budget cuts, but honestly, I think this will be a good thing. It will take some of the ratings pressure off, and Joss HAS to learn to operate within the constraints of a smaller budget, just because of the kind of TV show he makes (and the writing is creative enough that they don't NEED big budget).
THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER! I can stop checking Whedonesque twice a day and focus my stress on...er, RL and exams and such.
You're absolutely right... if Joss could learn to get comfortable with a small budget then he could get shows onto Sci-fi or other channels where the ratings don't mean much and his core fans would actually be enough to keep his shows on the air as long as he likes.
He showed with Dr. Horrible what he can do on a (relative) shoe string.
