-We had our very own first school shooting here in Greece, and I’ve been doing my best to avoid TV coverage of it and sticking to newspapers/news blogs, because the asshole TV journalists are making me upset in ways that are entirely unrelated to the sad event. From drawing flimsy connections between this and anti-government violence (NO. Just…no. These were obviously the actions of a mentally disturbed young man, not some political protest act) to continuing the frustrating trend towards American news-style infotainment by pointing out that the guy wore a lot of black (!) and listened to that ‘rock-goth’ music. *headdesk* HAAAAATE. We don’t have a Faux News equivalent yet, but at this rate, we’ll get there.

-On a much lighter note, the marry/shag/throw off cliff meme: [livejournal.com profile] skuf gave me Tom Welling, Eliza Dushku and Kevin Smith.

Marry: That wasn’t exactly a difficult choice *points to icon*. I assume lots of marital sex would figure into the deal, right?
Shag: …eh. Though he doesn’t do anything for me anymore (mind you, Tom Welling circa Smallville season 2 is another matter), in terms of appearance, he’s still more my type than Kevin Smith.
Throw off cliff: Sorry Kevin Smith, but just by process of elimination. I’d feel really bad about it though. If you want to play, comment and I’ll give you three names.

Teenager wears black *and* listens to goth/rock music. DOOOOOOOOOOOM!

I've given up watching the news (okay, except for Petroula, I think she's funny), which I used to watch for the language practice, but I've come to realise that even that bleached blonde woman chat show host has more newsworthy events discussed. And really, that's scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Shoot me with three...

I kind of *have* to watch the news right now because I need to keep up with Greek current events for my upcoming exam, but I stick the state channels and have mastered the art of tuning out anything too rage-inducing (which is...oh, 75% of it).

I didn't see the actual quote about the music, but my mother called me about it, sort of amused, and asked if I was planning to engage in a gun massacre anytime soon.

It's an state exam for a job at a ministry here. The entry requirements are brutal: Several law branches, economics and some Greek and English writing requirements and the candidate-position ratio is about 20-1. Mind you, if I do get it, I'm set for life job-wise.

Me too. I didn't post about it on lj because...well, I don't want to be getting repetitive with my job woes.

Ah, the old "Bag, Shag or Crag" game – I'll play, have at me.

The thing that gets me about many of these school shooting situations is the part bullying plays in the scenario; no-one ever wants to deal with the fact that sad, fucked-up kids don't just wake up one day and decide to kill fellow students. Teachers & parents refuse to pay attention to bullying; it's not considered a "serious problem" until the kid snaps and shit like this happens. Or suicide, on another end of the scale.

They did mention his isolation from the class in the news, though I don't know whether it was traditional bullying or the cold shoulder. He was also an immigrant, so xenophobia might have played into it, but then again, so are a big portion of the students in those vocational colleges. Apparently his suicide note also mentions a recent heartbreak (and how she was bound to change her mind after he did what did-really clever, genius!). Anyway, who knows what the reasons were-probably a combination of the isolation, poverty, heartbreak and miscellaneous mental issues. But I'll bet an arm and a leg what MUSIC he listened to had nothing to do with it.

The meme: Ian McKellen, Gary Oldman and Ralph Fiennes. *iz evil*

oh can I participate in the marry/shag/throw off cliff meme? It sounds like fun!

And I'm really sorry about school shooting, and disgusted by those TV reports, it is like these people have a political agenda to promote and they are willing to exploit any tragedy to further that agenda.... Actually that sounds like what the neo-cons/religious right do all the time here in the USA, they even use natural disasters as proof of their insano ideology.

Ok, here's three names: Nathan Fillion, Joss Whedon and James Marsters.

Yeah, the news coverage is beyond frustrating. I just found out that the boy he shot will probably pull through, so that's something.

oooooo I love tlhe three you gave me (too easy, but VERY fun) I'll bring it over to my lj to respond! Thanks!

I'm glad to know that the boy he shot will be okay, it is such a tragedy to have children do this sort of damage to each other (and sorry, High School kids are still children to me), it breaks my heart.

Gimme three names! And can I borrow your bride from time to time? :p

pity about the poor, disturbed kid. Who cares what he listened to. I haven't watched the news in ages and I don't envy you for having to do it. It's great for my blood pressure :D

Have these: Callum Keith Rennie, Katee Sackhoff and Sean Bean. :P

And can I borrow your bride from time to time? :p

Hm. You can have her on the days I have Katee Sackhoff. ;)

The news are not good for one's stress levels.

Who is Kevin Smith? Is this the guy who wrote Chasing Amy and Dogma, because if so? I'd kick him off the cliff too.

Sounds like Greek News is getting as bad as some of the American news channels. I've turned off the news lately...can only handle so much negativity.

Curious about this meme...if you want you can give me three, but if I don't know the person, they go off the cliff. ;-)

Yep, it's that Kevin Smith. I take it you don't care for his work? :P

News varies here between the state and private channels (the former are better), but lately even the state channels seem to be flirting with ratings-grabbing infotainment.

Ok, the meme: Hugh Laurie, Anthony Steward Head and Daniel Craig.

I liked Clerks and the episode of Reaper he directed and edited, but that's about it. ;-)

Hugh Laurie, Anthony Stewart Head and Daniel Craig.

Oh, those are fantastic! No problems at all making a decision on that one. Hmmm...I'm guessing I'm supposed to write this up in my own lj and offer the option to others, right?
