It’s been ages since I made a rec post, so most of those aren’t new, but on the off chance some of you haven’t read them already:



Harry Potter

The White Road by perverse_idyll Snape/Harry This has been recced pretty much everywhere, and with good reason. Starting from a seemingly cracktastic premise (Lily in the afterlife watching scenes from her son’s life on TV), this fic proceeds to give us one of the best (if not the best) takes on Snape/Harry post-DH, in a story that’s guaranteed to take you on a rollercoaster of emotions while awing you with the lyricism of the language. perverse_idyll not only delivers canon-perfect characterizations of Snape and Harry, but also expands on what we know about Lily from the books to give us a human, deeply flawed yet still likeable, ultimately believable character. I simply cannot praise this story enough: just go, and find for yourself what all the fuss is about.


Merlin

Questions Better Left Unanswered by phantomjam Gen A coda to 113, addressing Merlin’s emotional state and providing much more satisfying Merlin-Arthur interaction than the episode did.


Quickening Days by mercurial_wit Merlin/Arthur Absolutely wonderful Groundhog Day-style fic, where Merlin and Arthur are forced to relive the same day over and over again. Long, plotty, hilarious and ultimately satisfying.


Sentry by 01100100 Gen Post-Lancelot, and Uther POV piece that showscases his fears, his stubborn blindness and prejudices. Great use of the Slash Dragon.


To Be Known by esohpe Gen Absolutely *perfect* take on the “Arthur finds out” theme. The circumstances of the revelations themselves are original, and Arthur’s reaction a bit more complicated than in most fics.


Sometimes I Forget I’m Still Awake by paperclipbitch Arthur/Gwen While my slash goggles are permanently on when watching the show, I admit I have a soft spot for this pairing, and this story gives a plausible way it might begin. After Gwen’s father’s death, Arthur feels compelled to be there for her.

Dead People and Other Loose Ends by penknife Gen Post-A Remedy to Cure All Ills, this gives a possible answer to the question of just how exactly Merlin explains the ever-growing trail of dead bodies in his wake, and gives some great character portraits of Uther, Gaius and the boys in the bargain.


Buggre Alle This by Signe (Anyone know their lj name?) Merlin/Arthur Oooh, I love well-done BodySwap!fic, and this manages to push all my buttons from the genre.


Boys and Girls by penknife Gwen/Morganna Because those two are just as slashy as the boys. Funny, sweet without being cloying and very much in-character.


The Weight of Words by waldorph Merlin/Arthur Going from the idea that perhaps Arthur isn’t as oblivious as he’d let us believe, a fantastic portrayal of Arthur, his burden, the thin rope he must walk and his looming destiny.

Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown by hackthis Merlin/Arthur It’s Arthur as a BABY DRAGON! Yes, it’s pure crack…though not significantly more than the show.

The World Under Heaven, Here All Is Lent by takadainmate Merlin/Arthur Longish, adventure fic in which the boys are forced to rely on their wits (heh) to survive, with action, wonderful use of magic and a lot of bickering.

Merlin (all Merlin/Arthur):
Red by obsessive24 I’m simply unable to coherently describe how amazing this vid is, so you might want to check out the 876876 recs of it around. This is Merlin as it could potentially be, stripped of all silliness right down to its epic core. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve rewatched it since downloading-I can’t even think of Arthur and his destiny without hearing the song in my head anymore.

Beverly Hills by giandujakiss This, on the other hand, fully embraces the crackiness and light-hearted feel of the show, but does so in an extremely clever, fresh and technically flawless way, and the song choice is kind of genius. Guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face.

Stay by wistful_fever Confession: I’m not, as a rule, a fan of sad/melancholic shippy vids as I find that they often feel a bit clichéd. The exception, of course, being when a vidder is so damned talented they manage to melt even my cynical, unromantic heart. This is such an example-emotionally affecting, with an almost otherwordly atmosphere and all-around gorgeous. I don’t know the first thing about vidding, so I couldn’t tell you what effects were used to make the source material look completely different, but the effect is stunning.

BSG
Straps by beccatoria Baltar/All Incarnations of Six, though could easily also be interpreted as Baltar/Crazy. Showing Six being dangerous, manipulative, oddly vulnerable, scary and just…oh SIX, you SEXY SHARK! And Baltar is just…Baltar. I can’t even describe it-such a perfect illustration of their twisted relationship.
