Lie to me some more, I LIKE it!

I don’t know why so many people are saying that the latest
lj_biz post is a)just as deliberately murky as the previous b)more of the same old asshattery or c)written by a drunken monkeys on crack. It seems crystal clear to me!
Granted, the ingenuous code they use might be hard to crack, but fear not-I speak fluent Bullshit. So in the interests of clarity:
Hey, everybody. We've heard loud and clear that a lot of you are worried about whether the policy clarifications we've been talking about are going to affect you or your communities.
STOP YELLING AT US, WE GET IT! And none of this of this is making us look good to potential buyers-who wants a brand that’s currently synonymous with kiddie porn, anorexic girls, and cat macros? And forget the advertisers, do YOU want to explain to
barak’s elderly aunt who googled her nephew about that appaling and tasteless photoshop of him and
anidash (And Frank! Have you NO shame?)…We can’t even go on. You people make us SICK.
Today we're announcing a revision to the process of how we deal with reports of child pornography. (Please note: We *know* there's a difference between the vast majority of fan art and child porn. We're definitely not lumping these things together.)
Why can’t you draw nice wholesome fanart, like Hermione petting Crookshanks? Wait, on second though, it’d be probably safer to have no touching. Or bed of any kind. Or Crookshanks. (That last part is irrelevant to our policy, but we don’t think we can look at another cat anytime soon. Besides, too much room for “Hermione’s pussy” jokes, you understand). My point is, why can’t you draw nice G-rated fanart (ah, but I see most of you currently ARE. Good job working WITH US, fandom!) instead of that filthy, smutty CHILD PORN?
We will absolutely *not* review private content in response to an unsubstantiated report that there is a violation “somewhere” in a private journal or community.
There are so many hours in the day-unlike you, Livejournal Users, we have lives! Why do you think we added the Abuse Button, at the bottom of the page? We want to get the business of banning you over as swiftly as possible. That way, WFI are happy, we are happy, and there’s enough time left to throw that impromptu company booze-up in celebration of the day Wednesday.
rachel’s bringing tequila.
And now the solid progress: Today we are making a significant distinction between how we deal with (a) photographs, films and videos versus (b) drawings, cartoons, animations and non-photographic images:
Time to put on the thinky hats. Here is where we outline all the different highly specialized legal and scientific methods that all lead to the conclusion of you being a Big Fat Pervert. Do try and keep up.
(b) Our process for drawings, cartoons, animation and other non-photographic images is slightly different. An image of this type that obviously violates our policy will be treated the same as a photographic image of child pornography, but in questionable cases involving a non-photographic image we will adopt a "two strikes" process.
See? Unlike the other child pornographers, you actually get a warning! You’ll totally not going to get suspended without warning, Scout’s Honour (You’d better be staying away from all the little Boy Scouts, you degenerate pederasts!). We realize it’s almost a double standard to treat some pedophiles different from others, but after showing our accountants the
fandom_counts link, we decided we like you better. You’re our ‘special friends’, in a way, to use your own slang, haha!
And yes, I know there might be a *slight* similarity to past events. You know, that time we send we wouldn’t suspend without warning, or go after fanart, and then totally did? Heh. Fun times! No but seriously, this time it’s different. We may have made false promises before, but the sincerity of today’s promise totally trumps any slight falsehoods of the past. It’s an uber-promise. Honest. We promise.
Really, would that face lie to you-----
?
We will first contact the user and request that the image, and any other similar images, be voluntarily deleted (or modified) within three days.
Look, we’re not unreasonable-if you want to add a wrinkle there, maybe a beard or hell, just make it Dumbledore/Aunt Muriel, then it’d be fine to keep the image up. Well, until we say it’s not. Of course.
. If there's no response within three days, we'll proceed with suspension. In the worst case, if someone was completely incommunicado during those three days, they could go through the appeal process.
We hope you realise that given our previous statement about dealing with ALL child pornography the same way, the appeal will include having a chat with the nice folks from the NCMEC. But don’t worry, I doubt they’d have a case-Rowling has neglected to tell the world Harry Potter’s current address in case they want further evidence, so there's really no cause for alarm. The little misunderstanding will clear up in NO time!
And any place where every single possible line of discussion has been dissected and ruled either okay or not just doesn't sound like a fun place to hang out.
Ah, come on, hasn’t all this been a jolly fun ride? Remember that time
burr86 got wasted and exposed himself to an old lady? Oh wait, you weren’t there for that. Er, those comments then, with the biting social satire! Wasn’t that a HOOT? See, we’re human, just like you guys. With slightly worse spelling.
What do you mean, fearing for your accounts? Stop focusing on the ‘what ifs’ and ‘whens’ and ‘what the hell does that TOS MEAN?’. Live in the now, throw caution to the wind, chill. Be like Burr. Or Ani (the man is a BEAST!). ;-)
We're hoping to give you enough of an understanding so that you can use your own judgment on how and where to post your content. If you're really, really concerned that something you're about to post might violate our policy and will be seen by someone who will take action to report it to us, then perhaps you should think twice before posting it. But we're not going out looking for harmless stuff to take down.
Better yet, submit it to US first, just to be sure. We can’t have that filth on our website, you understand, but some of the girls in the office keep talking about our last fun ‘artistic merit assessment’ session, and would like to see more of that. Maybe in some setting involving shackles? Thanks!
Many of you have asked about whether or not it is OK to link to outside content that falls into the category of child pornography, and the short answer is no, it's not OK. Think about it: If we said it was OK across the board to link to child pornography, then people would make communities just to do so. But again, any reasonable link is fine. And the same thing applies here: If you're really, really concerned that something you're about to link to might violate our policy and be seen by someone who will take action to report it to us, then you know, just don't link to it. In the case of questionable links, we'll use the "two strikes" process.
[SUPER SEKRIT MESSAGE TO NON-FANDOM CUSTOMMERS AND REST OF INTERNETS: Don’t worry, we are in NO way giving in to those Child Pornographers. I know some of you are confused, and scared, but all of us together can bring them to justice. Every time we use ‘child pornography’ in our posts, that’s code for you to get clickin’ on those report abuse buttons. Fly, my pretties!]
But most of you have stuck with us while we've figured it out and we really appreciate it – you've made the difference, and you've helped build a better process.
To the person who sent us a copy of ‘customer service for dummies’-we don’t know whether to be grateful, or insulted.
At least it’s not cat macros.
I realise the situation is not all that funny, but…Eh. *goes off to upload more icons to IJ*

Date: 2007-08-15 01:10 am (UTC)And I love your translation of what they are really saying...
it always amazes me when someone gets cartoons confused with porn. Recently someone saw some 6" plastic action figures on eBay that they thought should be banned because it looked like sexual postures, and I was just amazed that fully clothed plastic dolls (the kind that the clothes are carved onto) could ever seriously be considered to be doing anything sexual). Some times the puritanical zealousness to protect us from our imaginations really seems bizarro to me. Unfortunately the PTB here at lj seem to think they have to cater to the crazies instead of their customers.

Date: 2007-08-15 01:31 am (UTC)I know, right? It seems like such a simple distinction! Real life children are abused to make child pornography-to compare it to fanart is just...there are no words. It would be hilarious in its ignorance if it weren't so insulting.
And your story about EBay is not surprising. We live in times of moralistic hysteria.

Date: 2007-08-15 01:50 am (UTC)I'm glad there are people pursuing this...I have to say that I haven't even been reading the posts by the lj owners, for instance I hadn't read this one you are translating here. Can you give me the link to that?

Date: 2007-08-15 01:58 am (UTC)Some people are taking action, but frankly, I think it's futile. 6Apart is trying to change the whole Livejournal image and fandom, particularly its smutty part, doesn't fit the product they want to be associated with. Others are ignoring in hopes it will go away/in the belief it doesn't concern them, and some are backing up their ljs on other sites/stopping posting altogether.
I have an Insanejournal account that I plan to use as my primary account. I want to keep this lj to keep up with my flist (those staying anyway), but I'm not sure I want to continue posting here. It's against the rules to even link to 'objectionnable material' now, which means I can't even *rec*, and I have no inclination to self-censor myself. Got quite enough of that at Crumbling Walls/M_M to an extent, I'm certainly not doing it *here*.
(Ack! I keep meaning to post at FOV, but this has eaten my brain. I see you're discussing HP-I can't find anything to talk about on that, a mere few weeks after the book's release, how sad is THAT. I hate LJ)

Date: 2007-08-15 02:14 am (UTC)Most of the people I know hate change and don't want to burn their bridges/connections with friends here at lj, but speaking for myself I don't have any friends here at lj who aren't friends elsewhere online.
I had just recently paid for my lj and I don't want to be rushed into moving elsewhere... but that doesn't mean that I'm a loyal and happy customer. 6apart's efforts to make this the site they want is going to end up making this a ghost town, and they will lose their investment as they lose their customers.
So do you think insanejournal is the better site? I know a lot of people who seem to be moving (slowly but surely) to greatestjournal. It is the fragmenting that is so disappointing....
Yeah, we were slow to get to the HP discussion because Leena stopped reading after Hedwig was blown up and didn't get back to it for weeks.
