Additionally to the reply you've gotten to your question, there's also some questionable stuff Charles has done in the past (involving secrets, lies and altering his students' memories) that have definitely chilled relations between him and his students and knocked him off the pedestal that was also a factor. Not to mention that time he abandoned them to go live with Erik.
