ishtar79: (tvd:elena and bonnie)

-I'm very torn about the way this show treats its female characters. On the plus column, it has some of the best-written, most complex female characters on television. On the minus, it has the unfortunate tendency to kill them a lot. I can't say Jenna was exactly my favorite, and I was fairly indifferent towards Jules, but their respective death scenes were just brutal, and Jenna is particular acted the hell out of hers. Poor Jenna. Poor Elena, for that matter.

-At least John didn't survive the finale either. I appreciated the fact that despite his last-minute redemption and his letter to Elena, her grief was all about Jenna, as it should be.

-Bonnie descending upon Klaus like an angel of vengeance was the most badass thing ever. I certainly hope the consequences the witches mentioned in resurrecting Jeremy referred to his new Sixth Sense, because I worry about Bonnie (and Caroline, and any female character passing through the show who's not Elena). I'm just so relieved that she didn't sacrifice herself to battle Klaus, and I love how insistent Elana was that this simply wasn't an option. Very often Elena doesn't come through for her (female, human) friends the way they do for her, but in this case, she did.

-On that topic, I'm not sure how I feel about Jeremy seeing dead people, except that it will be fun to see some of actresses whose characters died again.

-Caroline continues to be a ray of sunshine (no pun intended) on this show. I loved the scene with her and her mother, and the way she just ignored her while she and Bonnie were taking care of business. I love that any residual vampire-related awkwardness between her and Bonnie, and what an amazingly powerful/competent team they make.

-A lot of Stefan's arc this season seemed to be more passive and consisted of him supporting Elena/trying to stop Damon for undermining her plans, so I'm definitely looking forward to his storyline next season.

-Oh, Elijah, you trusting fool. I couldn't even be mad at him for backing out of his deal with Elena and the Salvatores, since a running theme of this show is everyone being motivated by protecting their loved ones, but taking Klaus at his word was NOT a smart move. Still, given the established fact of the originals' near-invulnerability, I don't think we've seen the last of him.

-So I gather Damon, Damon vs Stefan and the Love Triangle Of Doom are a controversial topic in fandom, but I'm enjoying the hell out of Damon and Ian Sommerhalder obviously having the time of his life with the role without needing to justify his actions or compare him to Stefan. And I love his Odd Couple friendship with Alaric. I'm even shipping it a little bit.

-There were so many instances of characters willing to sacrifice themselves for someone else, it kind of got ridiculous after a point. It was less “touching” and more “oh, here we go again”.

-Having said that, I still loved Stefan's determination to save his brother's ass. And him interrupting Damon's extremely emo suicide moment was kind of lulzy.

-As much as I appreciate Elena's drive to protect those she loves at all costs and general badassery (her “go to hell” to Klaus, her breaking out of the police station), her readiness to act as a sacrificial lamb and seeming endless supply of forgivness when it comes to all things Salvatore is a bit of a concern.

-Good for Matt for refusing to get sucked in into the Horror Soap Opera of vampire and werewolf drama. Now can he please go away? He bores me to tears, and we have an excess of male characters as it is.

-Catherine continues to be fabulous, and unarguably the character with the most self-preservation around. And I liked her choosing to save Damon at the end. Yes, she's ruthless, and a survivor above all, but when it came to helping out without excessive risk to herself, she showed that's she's capable of even a small act of compassion. Which she did while taking an opportunity to snark at Damon and Elena, because Catherine's awesome that way.

-So if Klaus is going to be building an army of werepire hybrids, how does that work, exactly? In terms of the actual turning, I mean. His blood seems to negate his bite, so the tradionnal vamp way is out, but if he just bites them, wouldn't they only be woolfy (or dead, if he bites vamps). And does he need to bite humans, or vampires or werewolves? And why am I still trying to make sense of this show's convoluted supernatural lore?

-So now that Jenna's dead, who's going to act like Elena and Jeremy's guardian? Mind you, the social services in the TVD 'verse don't seem to notice that those kids NEVER GO TO SCHOOL, so this might slip by them.
