ishtar79: (hp:movies vs canon)

-So the official trailer is out, and I'm not sure how to feel about it.

On the one hand, I enjoyed part one, despite my feelings about the HP movies. Still, even from the trailer, I can spot the things that will bother me (ALAN FUCKING RICKMAN. Why must you ruin everything?).

And then there's the fact that this is really it, you know? I know the book series has already ended, and the movies are not new canon like the books were, but it was still something to anticipate, and the discussion/fanworks spike after each was off the good. I just hope the lack of those canon-ish injections won't slow down HP fandom to a crawl. Multifandom interests aside, HP has been part of my fannish existence for almost a decade, and to say I'm kind of attached would be an understatement. ;)

-I've added a bunch of new people since I figured that if I'm at DW most of the time these days, I might as well have something to read. It's mostly people that I meant to add for a while/found through the Network page. I should probably do a proper introductory post one of these days, but it's past 2AM here, so...*waves*.

Waving back. I wanted to tell you how much I've enjoyed your female character meme. It was one the post I was looking forward too each day in the last few weeks.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this last film, I think pt 1 was really well done....
and Universal built a whole huge theme park on the assumption that people aren't going to get tired of (or forget about) Harry Potter... I totally want to go to the theme park! lol

I assume you've seen the website? This should help to keep the books & movies alive!

The theme park sounds kind of fun, but given that the parts of HP fandom I enjoy the most are definitely not family-friendly, it's not exactly the kind of fandom momentum I was talking about.

Not that it wouldn't be a fun day-why must everything interesting be so faaaaar?

Far away AND expensive (I was looking up ticket prices and hotels...). But some day I'll go (evidently September is the cheapest time since it is very hot and kids are back in school). I confidently expect Nocturnal Alley and the Slithern House in Hogwarts to be very dark and twisted....

But yeah, it'll be interesting if people give up on fanfic et al without anything new coming along (JKR was foolish to tie up her seven books with that 15 years into the future thing... she could have written 'further adventures of Harry Potter' for the rest of her life).

All I can say is more Draco, less Ginny. I'm a simple girl. ;)

I will definitely see it too!

RE fandoms: HP was my first and I too searched for "new love" with mixed results, which are:

Watched 3 seasons of BBC Merlin tv series on YouTube. Currently season 4 is in the process of shooting. Overall Quality: Mediocre. In retrospect I wouldn't recommend watching it.

Also intend to watch "A Game of Thrones" American tv series, which "will debut on April 17, 2011. In the UK, the series will debut on Sky Atlantic on April 18, 2011". ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_(TV_series))

The trailer looks great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpJYNVhGf1s
Like HP I believe there is a potential for tv series to be better than the novels.

If you would like REALLY good fanfic, the best I ever seen in any fandom, it's antepathy's Shadow Vector arc. Read all except "Dead End". Quality: Exceptionally High.

"Let the Right One In" or "Let Me In" by John Ajvide Lindqvist
Both the Swedish movie and the book are great, especially the book. The 1st Dark Fantasy I found (HP or Martin's SoIaF aren't really dark at all imo). Even wrote a post about it:

I'm always dipping my toes in new fandoms, and in fact must have read fic for, uh...dozens of canons in the last couple of years. Occasionally I'll get somewhat more involved in one like Merlin (agreed, not the best quality) or Trek Reboot but they're just not as massive and varied as HP fandom, you know? And then there's the popular canons I can't seem to get into (SPN, Sherlock BBC) or the canons I adore but don't have much of a fandom (Dexter, Mad Men).

I'm planning on watching Game Of Thrones, so we'll see how that goes (love the books). And I've been meaning to watch Let The Right One In at some point.

I still haven't seen the first part of this movie. Must be my great dislike for the book.

It's so funny - HP was a big part of my online fannish experience as well, and now I'm totally over it. I'm not sorry for joining and being a part of the fandom for such a long time, but I'm sort of glad I've moved on. Objectively seen, HP is a good story, decently written, with some good, diverse characters. That's all - no more, no less.

I found the movie much better than the book and probably the best HP movie so far. No incessant whining about DD not loving him, no weeks of boring camping. Beautiful shots of nature, H&Hr dancing together as friends one evening, Harry looks more mature than in the book to me. Of course, it's subjective.

That's a good summation of why I liked the movie too-I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Well, as you know I never thought much of the literary value (ha!) of HP-I'm just really spoiled by the sheer volume and variety (both in terms of pairings and themes/kink/etc) of the HP fandom, which I've found so far to be unmatched. And admittedly, few characters in other canons have grabbed me quite like Snape did, so there's that.
