Well, when it comes to buying a pairing or chemistry, ymmv, obviously. I saw a lot of Kirk/Spock subtext in Spock prime and during that wonderfully bizarre conversation between Spock and Bones (with the 'breaking in' of the freaking STALLION, WHAT? The slash was practically jumping off the screen and giving the audience a lapdance). Not as much as I expected in the actual scenes with the characters, though I wouldn't be averse to reading some Kirk/Spock that avoids "We killed Uhura/made her a raging bitch/ewww, girl cooties!" tropes.
Er, I went off in a tangent. My point being, people ship what they ship. It's the way some people expressed said tendency I found problematic.
LOL at the story about your dad. I once got over a crush on a certain actor who shall remain unnamed when I realised some of his convention behaviour reminded me of my father. I mean, I was in my early twenties, but still, talk about your instant cold shower.
