In the musical the two Father's are planning a staged abduction so one's son can save the other's daughter... the term 'rape' was never meant literally... Obviously here the song works on a much more intense level because the rapes are real on Dollhouse (well as real as TV sci-fi drama can be, which isn't all that real). But it works for me because it would be insane if Joss pretended that that wasn't a HUGE part of the Dollhouse, and if we pretended that that wasn't a huge part of the real world. I think that this show has as much (or maybe better) chance of making people more self aware of the issues of objectifying women and exploiting others for personal gain, as any news report (which uses the most horrific footage they can find, sensationalizing the subject the 'report on') or self righteous documentary.
But maybe that is just me. I trust Joss to treat the topic with emotional honesty, but I think many viewers have blinders on (maybe I'm the one with the blinders? Do you think? lol).
