  • I finally watched the 300 yesterday, and honestly, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Why must you insist on 'drawing inspiration' from my country's history, Hollywood?

But of course, this isn't about historical accuracy, being based on a comic and all. And let's even leave aside the misogyny, racist stereotyping, uncomfortably clunky and inappropriate parallels to current political events and odd mix of homophobic machismo with rampant homoerotic imagery. But whoever felt necessary to 'translate' Thermopylae to "Hot Gates" needs to be shot NOW. 300 half-naked, muscular men at the Hot Gates? I think I saw a porno like that once.

  • My current splitting headache is only partly Frank Miller-induced though. A PSA: when reaching under desk to retrieve an item, it's best not to keep your eyes on the computer screen, or you will know the literal meaning of "headdesk". Thanks to my epic klutziness, I'm now sporting a black eye.

  • I still haven't decided what to do with my LJ-I'm no longer comfortable on Livejournal, but I'm still crossposting until I figure out what the best way to keep up with the portion of my flist staying on LJ (I think feeds might be helpful, provided I can figure it out). I'm open to suggestions, btw.

My previous post, which contained a few recs, was IJ-only though. I'm not going to be posting recs on Livejournal, for obvious reasons-and while I could, in theory, play the 'sort out the offending material' guessing game, I'm not willing to get into that way of thinking. The amount of self-censorship I'm already doing is quite enough.

There is an excellent post about 300 by [livejournal.com profile] vincula here (http://vincula.livejournal.com/18212.html).

As for LJ/IJ, would it be possible to do some kind of feed of the LJ's you want to read?

Haha, yeah. 300 was ridiculous alright. What crap dialogue! I don't know why the people who like that film weren't blown away by the homoerotica/homophobia contradictions.

I can't beleive you headdesked!

I'm so sorry about your poor eye! That is terrible that you gave yourself a black eye!

Aw, I liked 300. Didn't take it seriously at all, just looked at the pretty men and laughed my head off at Xerxes.

(eixa kai kati enlightened Ellinares dipla na sfyrizoun "pou pas kale me ta xrysa" kai alla xaritwmena).

So sorry about the eye! Hope it's better soon!

Wow, he sure knows the history bits. I did think the movie was gorgeous visually (and yes, the eye candy didn't hurt), but it was so over the top I ended up laughing through most of it. That was made worst by the fact that a)I watched it with a friend and b)my speakers are screwed up and drown out the dialogue, so I switched the audio channels, and ended up with something that can only be described as commentary for the blind-there was a male voiceover describing what was happening onscreen any time there wasn't actual dialogue. He seemed to be especially keen on lines like "Leonidas stood, the moonlight falling on his muscular body'. Er, yeah. That increased the hilarity.

About the feeds, I think I'll do that. I'm planning to get a paid IJ account, and a helfpful member of my IJ flist is talking me through the process. And I plan to of course keep checking the flist on LJ/commenting.

Because people's ability for denial knows no bounds?

I can't believe I headdesked either. My eye is actually swollen and *very* purple, people on the street kept giving me pitying looks. They probably think someone fucked my shit up.

I'm such a klutz.

And I currently look like I went two rounds in a boxing ring.

See my comments above to Baroness. There were *lolz* to be had while watching the movie, that's for sure.

(eixa kai kati enlightened Ellinares dipla na sfyrizoun "pou pas kale me ta xrysa" kai alla xaritwmena).

*snort* Charming. The gap between ancient and modern Greeks kind of blows my mind.

I'm sure the eye will get better. Right now, it's swollen and violet, but I still have the black, green and yellow stages to go through.

Btw, are you getting notifications for your LJ comments? Because I'm NOT.

LJ h8 levels reaching critical mass! But hey-Pepsi Max makes all things better.

Leonidas stood, the moonlight falling on his muscular body

*splutter*

He's a bit of a history geek (plus we both did some research after seeing the film). I watched the film in German the second time around (serves me right for not checking what I was downloading!) and it's hilarious! The dubbing isn't bad, it's actually quite atmospheric, but it's just so funny.

Hopefully this (http://mashable.com/2007/08/17/portable-social-networks/) will pan out.

My favourite thing about 300, apart from the ridiculous wolf, was at the end when they panned across his dead body and there were like, 499367593 arrows in him. Overkill, much?
