Oh, the original x-men is what I skipped. That was way too ridiculous for me, I kind of want to bleach my brain of their characterizations back then since they all seemed to change for the better later. Except maybe Scott, man his moral compass is so damn black and white, I'm kind of surprised he's existed this long, he cannot be a popular character. I suspect he mellows out later, since I'm only like 113 issues in.
Reading these these comics now I'm kind of surprised and super happy that Storm existed back then, she's more badass than a lot of female characters in stuff today. It pains me greatly that her every movie incarnation has been so underused and meh. All I can figure is it's difficult to come up with problems that someone with weather powers wouldn't be able to fix disproportionately often (though comics gave her claustrophobia for that). I don't doubt that most of why X-men commanded my affection over Batman or some of the other superhero series I liked was just due to the amount of girls kicking ass.
I grew up on the stuff right after they changed up the team, and I have the sneaking suspicion that people who didn't grow up with it wouldn't find so much of what I'm reading so interesting! Still there's definitely some filler bits, but I'm good at sensing when it is and skimming through it (and a lot of the action). Reading scans on the computer is sort of annoying compared to books but it's not like I'm going to spend the money to get physical copies, so there's not much to be done I suppose.
