Well, obviously I can only speculate about having no knowledge of Trek, but as someone with minimal knowledge of the original series, I LOVED this. Keep in mind that this IS the first Trek with such a huge crossover appeal to wider audience.
I think a Trek background makes the experience more fun due to getting the little references, but honestly, I don't think it's a requirement to enjoying it.
