Linkage and rec

Rec: [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss made an excellent and disturbing vid addressing some of the skeevier aspects of Dollhouse: It Depends On What You Pay . The vid really worked for me, even though I don’t necessarily think that the show is unaware of the problematic rape depictions and doesn’t textually acknowledge them. I actually think it’s attempting to make a commentary on the all-encompassing rape culture and general commodification of sexuality in the society we live in. Whether it’s successful in that attempt is another matter and largely dependent on everyone’s interpretation of it.

On that same topic, an interesting (positive)blog post on feminism in Dollhouse, from the perspective of someone who wasn’t into Buffy. Definitely worth a read.

Russian President Mevdevev apparently got an lj. Insert your own ‘in Communist Russia…” joke here.

In the musical the two Father's are planning a staged abduction so one's son can save the other's daughter...
the term 'rape' was never meant literally...
Obviously here the song works on a much more intense level because the rapes are real on Dollhouse (well as real as TV sci-fi drama can be, which isn't all that real). But it works for me because it would be insane if Joss pretended that that wasn't a HUGE part of the Dollhouse, and if we pretended that that wasn't a huge part of the real world. I think that this show has as much (or maybe better) chance of making people more self aware of the issues of objectifying women and exploiting others for personal gain, as any news report (which uses the most horrific footage they can find, sensationalizing the subject the 'report on') or self righteous documentary.

But maybe that is just me. I trust Joss to treat the topic with emotional honesty, but I think many viewers have blinders on (maybe I'm the one with the blinders? Do you think? lol).

I think Joss' message is very well-intentioned, but the execution on getting said message across could be better. Less gratuitous skimpy outfits, for one thing. I totally see the statement he's trying to make, but the fact some posters at Whedonesque are STILL arguing about whether it's rape means it flies right over the heads of a good portion of the (male) audience.
