Overdue Trek recs

Gen
A Formal Dance in the Bowling Alley by [livejournal.com profile] loneraven Summary: Here are some things that James Tiberius Kirk, Captain, does not understand about the Enterprise and her crew. The Enterprise crew in their new surroundings. The love for the characters clearly shines through.

Back in 2256 by [livejournal.com profile] rocknload Summary: Things were different two years ago. Snapshot of the characters’ lives pre-movie.

The Things He Sees by [livejournal.com profile] suzanne78 Summary: Bones has already lived his life... and now, it's about to begin again. If only he could figure out that blasted Vulcan! The first adventure of the starship Enterprise through the eyes of Doctor Leonard McCoy in a series of drabbles. There cannot be enough Bones fic in this fandom! Excellent McCoy voice.

How to Avoid Kicking Puppies and Other Valuable Lessons in Leadership by [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 There’s a reason this has been recced all over the place-though it should be noted that the consumption of beverages while reading is not recommended. Kirk is wonderfully clueless at this ‘captain in a non-crisis’ thing, McCoy is as wonderfully snarky as ever and Chekov is a cute puppy, damn it!

This Academic Discourse by [livejournal.com profile] seriousfic Summary: There are some subjects an Orion woman finds a little hard to study. Absolutely wonderful examination of Gaila dealing with Starfleet prejudice and condescension-gives the character another dimension while still keeping her as free-spirited and irrepressible Gaila. Nice Uhura and Kirk appearances too.

ten thousand half-opened doors by [livejournal.com profile] _seven_crows Summary: "I didn't know ribs even could bruise."
Another filling-in-the blanks story, this time from Kirk’s perspective. Excellent Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

The Helmsman by [livejournal.com profile] imadra_blue Summary: Moments of Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the USS Enterprise.
Pretty much what the summary says, with a bonus Spock Prime cameo (I’m loving the newly emerging “Everyone Eventually Meets Spock Prime” cliché)

Spock/Uhura
Ad Astra by [livejournal.com profile] taraljc Starting off after that turbolift scene in the movie, this story does a great job of fleshing out what we did see onscreen as well as filling in the gaps in a way that both provides us a complete and satisfying look at the relationship while seamlessly blending in with canon.

Speaking in Tongues, The Seven Year Itch and Reason and Rhyme by [livejournal.com profile] monimala A series of fics showing the Spock/Uhura relationship developing in the academy days. Utterly addictive and hot.

Universal Language by [livejournal.com profile] ryann_blackwood Summary: Spock and Uhura meet at the Academy. It wasn't exactly love at first sight. Long and plotty, I especially like the relationship starting off on the wrong foot.

Kirk/McCoy
I'm Just A Jealous Guy
by [livejournal.com profile] londondrowning Summary: Leonard McCoy is thirty-one and he’s too fucking old to be anybody’s jealous boyfriend. I love how their relationship is essentially of their existing banter and that Bones will never not want to strangle Kirk, even when he’s doing him.

I see you've been busy reading. ;)

Thanks for the recs. I know I'll need them soon and everything here sounds intriguing. But I guess I'll have to find any K/S myself. ;)

Am not overly impressed with the reboot K/S fics up to now, but these are good, if you haven't checked them out yet:

Thank you! :) After seeing the movie I've somehow ended up re-watching TOS and I haven't read but a couple of fics so far.

Can't rec anything from TOS (not a big fan am afraid, but the reboot is doing wonders for me), and I think we need to wait a bit for the good new K/S fics to pop up, there's crazy interest, but it's all bits and snipets and some seriously smaltzy stuff, so I'm giving it a few weeks and wait for the awesome writers to wow me with their new magnus opus. If you like vids, this is pretty good Spock POV: http://www.imeem.com/talitha78/video/2t5xzZK9/talitha78-poker-face-dance-video/
And a Kirk POV, to the rhythm of Ms. Spears, which works surprisingly well:

I'm really not sure how it happened with TOS. I just wanted to refresh my memory a bit in light of the new movie, because I only watched it as a kid and had forgotten nearly everything, and now I'm somehow hooked and can't stop watching despite the laughable 60s special effects and the gender roles that are grating on my nerves. Oh, well, I'll finish and then devour all the new Trek fic. There's bound to be some good stories since this fandom seems to have now exploded.

I know those vids but thanks all the same! I've enjoyed them a lot and am hoping there'll be more soon!

Yep, I should probably get back to reading stuff for my exam.

I see Penelope's got your covered with the Kirk/Spock recs.
