Games of Thrones 1x06 review
-Damn it, I wanted Tyrion’s confession of his “crimes” to go on a bit further (and it seems Lysa’s disturbing little boy did too). I love how he never stops plotting, though his initial approach to the MENSA candidate guard clearly needed some tweaking (seriously, Tyrion, “abstract concept” might be…well, too abstract a concept for this audience).
-And speaking of Lysa’s boy, he might be surpassing Joffrey in the “brat most deserving to have his head bashed in” stakes. His clapping over the prospect of Tyrion’s death… *shudder*
-I flove Master Syrio. I kind of want him to cross over to other canons and snap various “heroes” out of their pity parties. But seriously, stellar job in that scene from the actress playing Arya (as usual), and the practice fighting did a good job at showing her vast improvement in a plausible way.
-It was nice to see Bran’s spirits considerably pick up thanks to Tyrion’s saddle. His smile at the prospect of getting out of bad lit up the room, and he threatened his attacker in the most mini!Stark badass way.
-Ned continues with the grand, heroic gestures and the EPIC STRATEGY!FAIL. Going after Sir Clegane and effectively declaring war on the Lannisters right after Robert told him not to? Damn, Ned, if only those brass balls were matched by common sense.
-As fundamentally untrustworthy as Littlefinger is, Ned could have benefitted from his warnings tonight, especially the bit about gold winning wars (hell, even deluded!Viserys seemed to understand that better, with his attempt to steal the dragon eggs).
-Somebody who fully grasps the concept of survival > honour: Bronn. I felt bad for Lysa’s doomed (and hot) knight, especially as he kept getting up and bravely hobbling towards Bronn, but in the end everyone’s favourite mercenary was right: honour is a poor consolation when you’re very, very dead.
-Joffrey’s contrite act was actually very convincing…for anybody not watching the show. Sansa clear fell for it, and I was once again torn between sympathy and wanting to shake some sense into her. And yes, she’s still a child, but this episode demonstrated that the Stark children don’t have the luxury to be children.
-You know the Starks suck at politics when even a prostitute is better at predicting the political tides than them. Goodbye, Roz! Look up Littlefinger in King’s Landing, I’m sure he’ll appreciate someone with your business acumen at his employ.
-Sansa doesn’t want someone “brave, gentle and strong”, you guys, she wants Joffrey!
-You could practically see the light bulb going off over Ned’s head during Sansa’s impassionate defense of Joffrey. Glad you could join us in the clue room, Ned, pull up a chair.
-I was very excited as soon as I saw the episode title, and Viserys finally getting what was coming to him didn’t disappoint. Dani’s reactions during the whole scene were perfection, from the almost pitying look she cast Viserys even as he held her at swordpoint, to the moment she realized his fate was sealed (and I loved both her silent communication with Drogo and her poker face as she “translated” Drogo’s order) and her refusal to flinch away from her brother’s “crowning”. You’ve come a long way, baby!
-Yay, Jason Momoa gets English speaking lines! They really sold the change in Dany and Drogo’s dynamic in this one. He conveyed such pride at her during the (kind of stomach churning) heart-eating scene and there was such an ease at how they were with each other at the feast before Viserys drunkenly stumbled to his doom.
