random TV thoughts

-So I signed up for DiaCon Alley this summer. This will be my first fannish convention since...oh, that SFX thing about a decade ago. Very excited about that.

Some thoughts on the latest Big Love and Fringe:

Big Love has been a bit...weird this season. I'm almost feel like the show is trying to get us to root for Bill, not as much as in Bill the person (because he's a massive douchebag), but in the 'root for his latest crusade' way. Which, um, NO. How is it that he gets more despicable and repulsive each year? It's a talent.

The underage!Margene revelation came out of nowhere, and I'm amused at how suddenly the wrongness of Bill/Margene is stressed. A man in his fifties in bed with an 18-year-old is a midlife crisis, but a man with a sixteen-year-old is a pedophile? Not that I'm saying ages of consent shouldn't exist, but let's face it, it was icky before too. I remember 18. I thought guys in their early thirties were too old back then (and being in my early thirties now, the idea of having a relationship with a teenager is nothing short of ludicrous.),

But I'm enjoying the show, mostly due to ignoring Bill and focusing on the women. The three wives' dynamic is awesome and the femslashiness is reaching epic levels (Nicki asking Barb whether she drove her “into Margene's arms”? I DIED!). All of Lois' scenes this week just about broke me, especially her losing it in the garden, and being supported by Barb and Nicki. How is it that a show based on such a fundamentally sexist premise has some of the most fascinating, three-dimensional female characters?

I'm not sure how to feel about Fringe right now. I mean, the season has been great, but the idea of the future of the universes depending on Peter starring in some fucked-up version of a dating show is just...ugh. Talk about stripping the Olivias (and really, all characters who aren't Peter) of their agency. Still, the writing has been stellar so far, so maybe they'll turn this WTFery around.

Random moment of meta amusement: during Nina's search of William Bell's office, the camera randomly focusing on a parenting book by Doctor Spock. Well played, props people. This is especially funny to me, given that my mother read those books when I was a kid, and whenever
she mentions Dr Spock I get this weird image of a book advising parents on raising a child in the ways of logic.

On an utterly shallow note, damn, Nina Torv looked ten kinds of hot when glammed up. I appreciate how practical and professional her normal look is but wow, she was working some vintage Hollywood glamour. Olivia: will shoot a man's SPINAL CORD off, and look fabulous doing it.

In non-spoilery TV news, I just watched the Dirty Little Liars pilot (I love my trashy teen shows, don't judge!), and did a double take when I saw Bianca Lawson (of Kendra from BtvS fame). Playing a teenager. According to imdb, she's born the same year as me. Don't get me wrong, she looks pretty damned fantastic, but what kind of crack were the casting people smoking? I mean, I'm often mistaken for younger, but the idea of trying to pass as a teen...lol, no. Ah, the mysterious rules of teenage!TV land. Giving reality the middle finger since Andrea of 90210.

I'm thrilled that Bianca is working. I just wish there were more roles for what she is: a beautiful, talented, adult woman. But TV land apparently likes to pretend the only ages that exist are teens (maaaybe early 20somethings)...and their parents.
