-I went on a mini-friending spree, mostly people from my IJ flist (because IJ itself is pretty dead these days) and a few people I’ve been meaning to add on LJ for a while. So. *waves*

-I succumbed and ordered the complete Buffy DVD series from Amazon UK, as an early Christmas present to myself. Never mind that I only relatively recently rewatched my downloaded Buffy eps. At only about 72 euros, I *had* to have it (plus, commentaries, whee!).

-And speaking of special Amazon offers, why are the Trek shows so expensive? I guess Sci Fi geeks are supposed to be more willing to spend than average fan geeks-me, I’m sticking with torrents. I’ve recently rewatched DS9, which reminded me of why it’s my all-time favourite Trek. I also rewatched Voyager, and rolled my eyes at the copious use of the reset button, missed storyline/character development opportunities, and how after a certain point, the show became All. About. Seven (and I actually liked Seven, but come ON!). I’m currently working my way through Enterprise, which is not quite as godawful as I remember it.

-While I enjoyed it a lot of aspects of it, my main issue was that it lacked the dramatic weight the trailer seemed to imply. I wish Gaius hadn’t survived-while I love the character, it would have made for a much stronger episode.

-Mind you, I loved the Merlin-Nimueh interactions. Those two have some very nice chemistry (more than Merlin had with any other female character), and the magic duel? Kind of awesome. The first time that Merlin becoming the greatest wizard that ever lived looked even remotely plausible. Also, the duel as well as the angry confrontation with the dragon made Merlin surprisingly attractive for a bit. I wonder what that says about me.

-While I’m still holding on to the tiny hope that we’ll see Nimueh again, I’m still sad about the end of the character. Still, even that is it, isn’t just a season of this worth the cancellation of the laughably bad Bionic Woman, Michelle Ryan?

-And on the topic of Nimueh’s death, my, Merlin’s amassing quite the body count, isn’t he? Not that I object to my heroes being less than pristine and occasionally getting their hands dirty (besides, what else can he do with the various evil wizards? Lock them in Azkaban?). And I do realize that people tended to be more cavalier about the value of human life in the era. I just wish there was even a hint of textual acknowledgment that the hero of this show seems to have killed more people than Dexter did this season. Between all the previous episode angst about whether just allowing Uther’s murder would make him as just as bad (followed by the cheerfully nonchalant offing of two minor antagonists), I find the issue being swept under the rug slightly disturbing.

-I know there’s been some buzz about the surprise evilness of the slash dragon, but really, I totally get where he’s coming from. We already knew that he was gung-ho about Uther meeting an violent end-is it really so surprising that he might have some personal motivation in magic returning to the realm? All the other dragons are dead, magic has been persecuted and all but wiped out, he’s locked in an underground cave, and the highlight of his day is listening to a teenage boy’s constant complaining and questions. Is it really so surprising that he might want to look forward to more than just playing Magical Agony Auntie?

-Man, poor Morganna must have felt so useless in this episode. But then again, it’s hard to make good use of all the characters in an episode that includes no fewer than three life-or-death situations, epic journeys, and gratuitous angst. I did like the hint that Morgana has started realizing her ‘bad dreams’ are neither random nor incidental.

-I’ve heard complaints about the Arthur/Gwen scene, but I thought it was nice. I’m still trying to figure out how they’ll go from her being a servant girl who he likes to tease to her becoming his queen. For one thing, it would require a convincing case for Arthur’s heterosexuality (the only female he got smoochy with had to enspell him-I’m just sayin’).

-I’m glad Morganna and Gwen’s relationship has progressed to Gwen spending the night over. Or maybe Gwen just permanently wanders the castle know, waiting for a chance to fondle comfort Morganna or Arthur. Not that I blame her.

-Man, Arthur is not very bright, is he? He seemed oblivious to the undertones of Merlin’s goodbye speech (and subtle, they weren’t). I could fanwank that he filed the teary expression and frank advice as Merlin being shaken by Arthur’s brush with death, but I’d be giving his perceptive abilities too much credit. He is just that self-absorbed, still. Bless.

-Oh Uther, you (not so) cold-hearted bastard. You broke my heart in a hundred ways in this ep. The shot of him carrying Arthur in the courtyard was all kinds of epic.
