Doctor Who 4x11
Thanks everyone who wished me a happy birthday. It’s taken me almost two days to get over the hangover-I’m getting OLD!
This made me very sad George Carlin has passed away.R.I.P., and thanks for the laughs.
I need a Donna icon.
After a practically Donna-free episode last week, the show more than made up to it with this one.
I kind of want to build a shrine to the genius talent of Catherine Tate. It’s funny that I was sort of apprehensive about her being on the show, having only The Runaway Bride to go on, yet within the space of one season I’ve come to love Donna beyond reason.
My worries about Rose’s detracting attention from Donna were unfounded-this was, without a doubt, Donna’s episode all the way. I did enjoy her interaction with Rose though-other people have commented extensively on Billie’s odd marble-mouthed delivery, so I won’t comment on it (it was a bit distracting, especially since she sounds so normal in Secret Diary of a Call Girl-what the hell?), though it was nice to see Rose, even if she seemed to have lost her sparkle that made me love her the first time around.
The Children of Men-ish alternate reality was appropriately hopeless and dystopina-and everybody died. Honestly, it was so dark it became inappropriately funny at times-like the Whedonesque segue from “America will save us!” to “60 million Americans became living fat!”. (And I’m sorry, but that ridiculous storyline strikes fear into nobody’s heart!)
But despite the strange combination of Who and post-Apocalyptic plot, the one thing that remained believable throughout was Donna. Going from comically self-absorbed to honest-to-God martyr, and never once overselling it. The word ‘hero’ is overused these days to the point of barely having any meaning, but in this case, it applies.
Btw, Donna’s mum=pure evil. It needs to be said.
The moment she was reunited with the Doctor was such a relief, but I’m still dreading the next two weeks. I’d love to believe that the death Rose referred to was in the alternate timeline, but something tells me it won’t be quite as painless as that. If Donna dies, I’ll fall apart, people!
Btw, the Bad Wolf writing at the end made NO SENSE, beyond looking cool. I thought the whole point of it in season one was that Time Vortex!Rose used her superpowers to leave the clue. How the hell is she doing it now? The more I think about the logistics of it, the less sense it makes.
So, next week, NOW PLEASE?
