I have little knowledge of the whole fandom issue as it personally holds no appeal for me, but I do think 6A/LJ have taken it too far (and from what I can tell, brad is jumping from a sinking ship (http://brad.livejournal.com/2334177.html)).

I'd recommend this (http://fawx.com/software/ljarchive/) which you can use to archive your posts, including comments. Sadly you need Windoze to use it (I have a Mac), other than that it seems pretty good.
