And I just don't think the Magneto=Spike comparison works much, especially if that sort of dynamic wasn't in New Mutant as you're saying

Magneto was kind of the opposite of fun when he led the New Mutants, wasn't he? I love him with kids, but I don't think he should be the sole authority in charge of them EVER.
