I understand why Marvel doesn't put them too often in the same team - they're one of the BAMFest people in the X-world and their powers, combined, would be a tremendous force.
Possibly precisely of how powerful they'd be? Might as well chuck in Phoenix, and all the Marvel villains will hang up their hats. On the other hand, Marvel has no problem having the Avengers line-up occasionally include GODS.
Still, I'm surprised that there's no story (at least none I'm aware of) where Charles and Erik work together against some cosmic villain/force/entity.
It is weird they never went there. Even Superman and Lex Luthor had reluctant team-ups.
