OMG, this post. So fantastic! I love how it so captures what's great about comics in general--in a way that reminds me of when soaps are good, only the feelings here are even more epic. Not only do you have this great, complicated relationship but you have these fantastic distractions. Like how you wind up having to say with a straight face "And he's best friend and only true love is dying in his arms and I just want to cry--thank goodness the space pirates appear to bring him to their ship!" And then you just have to continue on.
Also, how much do I love 80s/90s clothing in comics? Not just the hilarious Fame audition outfit, but even the detail of those sneakers with the lovingly recreated velco flaps.
I so adore that Erik just failed at running the school that way. Those are so my favorite type moments in any canon. It's like when people start getting to bashing at Batman and I'm like...no, see, he actually is a good father/mentor to the kids he brings in, despite him not thinking he would be. Magneto is like Bruce Wayne here but then *not* in the crucial way and that's why he's a supervillain.
