Days Twenty-Nine and Thirty: Female Character Meme
Due to technical difficulties yesterday, I'm doing the last two days in one post.
Day Twenty-Nine: A female-centric fic rec:
In Loco Parentis by
dolores_crane Snape/Harry Harry/Hermione
Do not be fooled by the pairings listed: this is a Hermione story, first and foremost. The Hermione in this story is complex, well-written and very close to the one in my head, which is a bit ironic in a story featuring a slash pairing, since all too often, female characters in slash tend to be completely written out or vilified.
This story touches on so many themes most fic tends to leave unexplored-politics, how inherently fucked-up certain aspects of wizarding society are, and abortion rights. And while Snape and Harry undoubtedly play a crucial role, they never overpower Hermione's story, and her personal journey. Bonus points for interactions between women, especially Hermione and a wonderfully fleshed-out Hestia Jones.
Day Thirty: Whatever you'd like! Rather than come up with a new “favorite” category, I'd like to include some of the wonderful female characters I would have liked to make entries for, but that the limited space in the meme meant I had to skip:

Chloe Sullivan: Whether it's the earlier!Chloe of the relentless journalistic pursuit for the truth and the constant romantic dissapointment or later Chloe of the increasing power and gravitas, she's the one character on the show that consistently had my sympathy. And Allison Mack gave on of the most nuanced, likeable and downright radiant performances I've ever seen.

Lois Lane: Apparently a lot of people hate Lois, which is baffling and ridiculous to me, but I'm led to believe that the character's healthy approach to sexuality (unlike the bizarre marriage of puritanism and titillation that dominates the show) and the fact that Erica Durance is traditionally hot is the root of a lot of that. Well, proof positive that most people quite simply suck. Lois is witty, smart, can kick ass when it's called for, loves her booze and takes crap from no one. How can I not love her?

Amy Pond: Another character hated due to fandom's complicated attitude towards female sexuality and, apparently, the existence of legs. Amy has a special place in my heard for fancying the Doctor physically without this being a huge romantic thing, for being an odd duck and for having this mixture of wonder and cynical detachment to being in the TARDIS.

Donna Noble: Fuck what was done to her in canon. Seriously, fuck it. Donna deserved so much better. I'll forever remember her hilarious put-downs of the Doctor most fondly, because let's face it, he needed a dose of humility.

Sharon Valerii: I can't actually chose between Athena and Boomer. I loved both of their storylines for different reasons, and while in later seasons, Boomer's story was Made Of Crack (and it wasn't the only thing), she was still one of my favorites in the beginning.

Six: All right, I admit I rolled my eyes at her at the pilot, thinking her primary purpose would be to provide the all-important eye-candy. Let me tell you, it's good to be wrong sometimes. And while supermodels giving nuanced, charismatic and gut-wrenching performances isn't the most likely outcome, Tricia Helfer proved it's certainly possible.

Toshiko Sato: Forget Ianto, there's one Torchwood death I'm inconsolable about. In a show I watched for the lulz, she was the one character I actually cared about. And she was entirely too professional and competent for that particular crew-she even saved her asses from the great beyond!
