I remember that quote. I rolled my eyes at it back then, and I won't deny there were glimmers of Saint Cordelia even early in her Ats run, but I liked the less anvilicious moments of her maturing (one of my favourite stories was her rapport with Dennis, the phantom flatmate).
And as for needing to be "redeemed"...you know, the majority of BtVS writers identifying as proud nerds often worked for them when coming up with clever metaphors for existential high school angst, but other times, their own personal (and ancient) "unpopular at high school" issues were showing a bit too much for my comfort.
